Burnout. Fatigue. Breakdown. Mental distress. Call it whatever you want, but it all leads to the same bleak place.  Today’s pace of business is relentless. Add in personal needs, family demands, finances and the path to exhaustion is inescapable.

Burnout is real

Burnout is the final sign of an overwhelmingly stressful work regimen that’s been in place for a while. It includes exhaustion, cognitive impairment, adrenal collapse and quite often depression.

But burnout is not just a result of long hours and demands. The gloominess, pessimism and lethargy of burnout is magnified when you’re not in control of how you carry out your job, when you’re working toward goals that don’t resonate for you, and when you lack support. Unless you…

…Stop, reframe and reset.

You have a choice

It is healthy to work hard and be committed to reaching your goals. But health and balance are also choices. It is not healthy to choose to sacrifice your health and well-being for success.

It’s an illusion

Putting in more hours will not make you more productive. When you’re tired and sick, everything becomes more difficult. You have to make the decision that there is only so much that can be done.  That’s a deep reflection on what to prioritize and what needs to change through elimination, delegation, setting limits, and sticking to it.

You teach people how to treat you.

  1. Reprioritization is a strategic, continuous, business activity. Tell management you’re overloaded using a spreadsheet of current deliverables & routine accountabilities is managing priorities. Make it a rigorous business and personal function.
  2. There is no better time to define your priorities. Corporations are bleeding healthcare costs for employee absenteeism — for personal days or short-term leaves, for mental health concerns. Companies are ripe for shifting the culture.
  3. Focus long-term: high turnover and teams who are short staffed & stressed cannot meet their numbers and innovate. Crushing stretch goals can be ‘rewarding’, but it’s not sustainable. Trust me. Read the stats yourself.

If you carry on over scheduling yourself nothing will ever change.

Change only happens where there is time and space to do something different.  Make it a priority to change.  The benefit is getting off the unrelenting hamster wheel.

Ready for change?

We all want to be successful, loved, to take risks & experience real happiness. As Einstein said, we cannot solve the issues we face at the same level of thinking that created them. To change the results we’re getting, we must change the way we think, and make our lives the result of our very best thinking!

How Flexible is your Mindset?

A fixed mindset says “I know what I know and I know that’s not possible so why try?” Or do you have a growth mindset that says “Why not me!”  And that includes your life. The work to make change is self-reflective. Research shows that even small changes begin to change a person’s success on many different platforms quickly.

Change your Thinking, Change your Life.

Stop, reframe and reset.  Or you will continue on this path towards burnout. The choice is yours: to prioritize your health, wealth and happiness or to carry on in onerous, laborious tradition.
