It seems funny to be talking about the fall right now as we’re only in the second week of summer, but the relevance is extremely important for professional women who want to thrive. In fact, over the years I’ve tracked a noticeable difference with the professional women who plan for development during their summer vacation versus those who just gearing down into complete coast mode.
A mantra I’ve been saying for years now is, “Enthusiasm is Easy, Endurance is Exceptional”.
In relationship to closing the gender parity gap and helping women reach their potential, looking at the end game, which requires endurance, is essential. Unfortunately, too many women are in a constant and repetitive “sprint to the finish” which is leading to burnout and difficulty staying the course for their own growth. To get out of this behaviour, a simple fix is to start thinking about your work performance and goals and add in a splash of development while vacationing.
This Is For You If You’re Saying To Yourself:
“I’m going to take the summer off to figure out what I need to do. Then come the fall I’ll implement what needs to happen and go from there.”
Thinking this way is a mistake because nine times out of ten, when the fall rolls around you won’t have taken any time to reflect on what you want, nor be in a position to implement steps towards making what you want happen. The biggest reason this is a mistake for women, is the voice of shame will be louder come the fall then the voice of endurance and action. Specifically you’ll be saying things like, “Here we are again, you didn’t do what you said you were going to” or “you’re so far behind and September only just began” or worse, “You’re never going to get what you want before the end of the year”. It’s during this time that women repeatedly shame themselves within the privacy of their own minds and it’s these thoughts that will keep you from achievement at the end of the year.

My suggestions are:
1) The Mindset of The Wealthy Woman Warrior™ – What To Do When Everything Is Falling Apart

#5 – Friday: Pick a Meal & Wine – Select someone to share your insights with and have a conversation about what you’ve read/listened to/enjoyed about these development tools.
What my husband and I like to do is implement this together while on vacation and then on the Friday we get a sitter for our kids and make an awesome date night out of it. It’s honestly dreamy – like taking a trip back to when we started dating 22 years ago and shared our initial hopes and dreams as young hip things!
