We’ve all been there.  Stuck. Feeling totally frustrated, unseen, undervalued and knowing you have no control…or do you?  When you hate your job there are usually numerous reasons why. Most focus on those reasons the moment they place their feet on the floor in the morning.  Many even replay these thoughts, “I hate this job!, This job sucks!, These people are ________!. Why do I keep doing something I hate?!”, or something to those effects.

If this is you – you have more options than you think and likely what you are thinking is preventing the movement you’re really looking for.  That said, try these 7 steps to discover your options and regain your happiness!

7 Steps To Guide You Towards Options & Happiness

Step 1 – Stop Focusing On All The Things You Hate

Michelangelo was miserable while painting his masterpiece in the Sistine Chapel.  His back and neck ached. Paint constantly fell in his hair and eyes. He couldn’t wait to be finished he would tell friends.  What got him through? Focusing on his vision of what it would look like done.

It is easy to focus on the negative, in fact our brain is actually wired to focus on the negative to keep us alive.  The issue with focusing on everything you hate is you dig yourself into a mindset of negativity and vulnerability. Why vulnerability?  Because you become the complainer, the grump, the entitled. If this is you, no one wants to be around you and no one wants to promote you or help you.  If you want to empower yourself with change and opportunity you need to stop focusing on what you hate immediately.

Step 2 – Interrupt The Mental Lists You’re Listing Off Of What You Don’t Want

When you ask someone what they want in life, their career, their relationships it is most often the response you receive is a long list of what isn’t wanted.  It’s easier to figure out what you don’t want because it creates feelings of pain, frustration, anger, worry, overwhelm and anxiety.

When you hate your job, listing what you don’t want is easy but it’s also keeping you stuck.  Instead of repeating the mental lists of what you don’t want, start interrupting those thoughts when they pop up.  Then consider instead what you do want. Take 10 minutes a day and come up with ideas of what you do want. You can do this on your commute, while you walk into the office, as you drop off the kids or even on your lunch hour or coffee break.

Step 3 – Create A Physical List Of What You Do Want

Once you’ve taken time to focus on what you do want.  Get out a piece of paper or “Notes” in your phone or ipad and put what you want down so you can physically see it.  Everyday look at the list of what you do want. Every day think about what mindset, choices, and actions you need to make this happen.

Step 4 – Interrupt The Belief That ‘No One Sees You”

What you believe and say to yourself, in the silence of your mind, will continue to keep you from what you want and the job you do want.  If you believe ‘No One Sees You” you adopt choices and actions that match it. If you think to yourself, “No one will care if I do ________ because they don’t see me/recognize me/appreciate me”, you’re handing your power over and conceding to that belief.  Today, acknowledge to yourself you will no longer think this thought or give that thought power. To interrupt the thought, when you think it, simply say to yourself, “I’m not giving over my power” and think of something on your list that you want.

Step 5 – Get A “Sit Down’

When you hate your job, in the silence of your own mind, you’re projecting a lot of things that may or may not be real.  When you hate your job, you need a champion and outside perspective. Get a sit down, in person, with someone who can help you.  That may be a colleague, that may be your boss, that may be an outside influence. Either way, you need to find someone who won’t agree with you but who will give you a way to look at things through a different lens.  You want the ability to explore your options because the grass isn’t always greener on the other side of the fence. Before you do something you can’t take back, get a sit down and explore.

Step 6 – Create A Plan

If I could tell you the amount of phone calls and sit downs I’ve taken from women who get to the point where they; “can’t take one more day of being ‘brutalized’, ‘taken advantage of’, ‘ridiculed’ and other sundry words and then decide in the heat of the moment to hand in their papers to ‘show them’ you’d pause for a moment here too.  On average, these women leave without a plan and end up in a terrible tailspin months later. If I can prevent one woman from this experience, I need to share this for that one reason.  Why does this tailspin happen?  It happens, because if you’re here, your mindset is already vulnerable. Without a plan, your confidence is going to take a beating, perhaps even harder than what you’re experiencing now. Create your plan. Explore your options. Focus on what you want and plan out how you can get it.  This step is a game changer and an empowering one.

Consider this, you are paid your salary while you’re creating your plan for growth.  It doesn’t mean you stop doing your job, being awesome or providing value.  It means you’re stable while you create the path to something you love.  It’s really that simple.  It’s empowering to walk into a place, knowing that you’re creating the best choices and actions for yourself, and be the bigger person.  That’s classy and will be remembered.  It also means you’ll never be considered, “The over-emotional woman who made rash decisions and took it personally.”  Take the high road here.  Be the professional with a plan.  It will bode you well and deliver inspiration.

Step 7 – Identify What Mindset Stage You’re In To Create The Mindset You Need For Results

If you hate your job, this means you’ve been good at a skill and have reached your peak and need to grow or move up.  If you’re not growing or moving up, it’s painful and confining. In the Prolific Mindset Blueprint this is stage 4 and 5 of the mindset cycle you continuously repeat through your life.  In order to find a job you love, you need to discover how to complete the stage so you can move forward. You can either go through this process using a mindset that will help you make choices and take actions, using thoughts that get you results, or you’ll continue to use the thoughts you currently have and you’ll stay stuck.

In closing, how you think about your job is what is either helping you move forward or keeping you stuck.  You have the power to make all the changes and create the results you deserve. When you learn how to change your thinking, your life and career expands. Let’s do this!
