A reflective process is a critical skill. It has huge benefits in increasing self-awareness, which is a key component of self-improvement and leadership development. And one of the greatest challenges in life right now is stress and burnout. The World Health Organization estimates that by 2020 depression will be the 2nd leading cause of disease worldwide. That’s a pretty staggering fact. When feelings of burnout start, many people focus on short-term solutions such as taking a vacation. While this can help, the relief is often only temporary. You can use Mindset training and Reflective strategies to make a deeper impact and create lasting change.
Invest in your Mindset
From a Mindset perspective, a reflective process is having a regime, a plan for your development and you need some steps and tools to facilitate the process. Mindset uses specific tools to help you redirect your thoughts in the situations that are relevant to you.
What Kind of Tools?
This can include reflective work like journaling or morning rituals. It can be visualization work like using your imagination to see yourself succeeding, and practicing new skills you are learning & developing for personal and work-related situations. But you need to do this as part of a process and it needs to be something you can do and use consistently. Remember, we struggle with change because old habits, thoughts and beliefs that are well entrenched in both our conscious and subconscious mind. You need a process to help ‘retrain’ that existing thinking and patterns.

A mindset coach would be different than a career or executive coach. A Mindset coach wants you to learn how to slow down, to have that meaningful learning about what you are thinking – consciously and subconsciously – and then to take aligned ACTION.
A Word of Caution
Reflective practice is one of the easiest things to drop when the pressure is on, yet it’s one of the things that you can least afford to drop, especially under those circumstances. Time spent on reflective practice will ensure that you are focusing on the things that really matter to you, your family and even your employer.
Start Here Today
You can become more open to becoming more reflective by trying the following:
1. Get yourself a pen and paper
2. Make a list of some important questions to you. But don’t answer them yet. Some sample questions could be:
What are you avoiding?
Am I happy? Do I feel stuck?
What is it that keeps you up at night?
3. Schedule time. Most people are driven by their calendars, so schedule yourself some reflection time for today, tomorrow and the next day. And then commit to keeping it. TIP: if you find yourself trying to skip it, reflect on that! Start small. If an hour of reflection seems like too much, try 10 minutes.
4. Do it. Explore your list of questions. Use a journal or have a talk with someone while you are out walking. Think. Consider a different perspective than your first reaction. Look at the opposite of what you initially believe. Brainstorm— just think to examine your thinking.
5. Repeat the next day. Are you finding any meaning to those important questions of yours? What astounds you or holds you back. You can add more questions at anytime.
This is a relatively simple process; it’s just something new right now.
You need a framework, some tools and the drive to get started.
Learning to train your thinking so that your mindset works for you is an investment in your future–it will help you reach the personal and professional goals you want to pursue!
The difference between just ‘thinking’ about things and a ‘reflective process’ is that a reflective process requires a conscious effort to think about events, and develop insights into them. Once you get into the habit of using a reflective process, you will find it incredibly useful for work and at home. Although it will take time to adopt the technique of reflective practice, it will ultimately save you energy and bring you well-being.
